Lean & Agile Enterprise Frameworks: Using SAFe 4.5 to Transform a Healthcare Portfolio

The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) is a de facto standard for lean and agile management, systems and software engineering, and new product development (NPD) of large IT portfolios, programs, and teams (including Fortune 500 firms, government agencies, acquisitions, and systems of systems). SAFe is used by 30% of organizations constituting 130,000 professionals in over 100 countries. SAFe is a multi-level model consisting of policies, governance, metrics, roles, responsibilities, artifacts, best practices, and tools for lean and agile budgeting, portfolio and value stream management, enterprise workflows and threads, complex acquisitions and programs, and multi-team project management. SAFe provides the program management and systems engineering discipline necessary to build complex, enterprise-wide mission and safety-critical systems using lean and agile principles. Dr. Rico will define lean and agile portfolios, programs, and teams. He’ll briefly introduce SAFe, highlight its newest features for innovation, continuous integration, continuous delivery, and DevOps. He’ll introduce a metrics taxonomy for SAFe portfolios, programs, and teams. He’ll walk the audience through each of SAFe’s levels and metrics (illustrating case studies; tips, tricks, and techniques; and personal experiences). Finally, he’ll close with a list of SAFe benefits, change management tips, adoption and worldwide proliferation statistics, a summary of lessons learned, further resources, and a host of related metrics and quantitative performance outcomes.
