Track 2: Artificial Intelligence | Room: 1454
Mohammad R. Arbabshirani
Data Scientist, Innovation & Enterprise Solutions, KPMG

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become part of our vernacular. Amazon recommends items based on past purchases, Netflix suggests movies from past viewing, while Alexia and Siri respond to human requests. In healthcare, AI is supporting decision making for patients and clinicians through wearables and clinical decision support. The future use of AI holds great promise, only if we learn how to properly apply it today. During this session we will start with the fundamentals of what AI is, how it is currently leveraged healthcare, discuss lessons learned and look to the future application of AI to improve patient care.

Dr. Mohammad Arbabshirani is a member of KPMG’s Data & Analytics Center of Excellence. As a practitioner, researcher and an engineer, he has many years of experience in applying machine learning, artificial intelligence, computer vision and data analysis to complex problems in healthcare. His main focus is designing data-driven intelligent models based on various sources of data such as images, text and voice. In addition, as an experienced full-cycle data scientist, Dr. Arbabshirani enjoys understanding business questions, collecting, extracting, cleaning and analyzing the data, and finally visualizing and communicating extracted actionable knowledge. His analytical background began in academia where he worked on high-dimensional brain imaging data. Dr. Arbabshirani has published over 30 peer reviewed publications in top journals and conferences in the fields of brain imaging, machine learning, computer vision and medical image analysis. In the past 10 years, he has presented his findings at many prestigious scientific venues. Dr. Arbabshirani most recent article “Advanced Machine Learning in Action: Identification of Intracranial Hemorrhage on Computed Tomography Scans of the Head with Clinical Workflow Integration” was published in Nature Digital Medicine in 2018. This paper reviews the research conducted by Dr. Arbabshirani and his former colleagues at Geisinger Medical Center’s, Department of Radiology.
