Pay is often cited as one of the top reasons employees move out of the public sector, however, the employee experience is likely the bigger culprit. Creating a great place to work is where human resource leaders in state governments have more control and can make a bigger difference. The current job market has put a damper on recruitment and retention efforts leaving many governments looking for best practices from each other and the private sector to stay competitive. When compensation becomes the hurdle, looking for greater opportunities to promote happiness and satisfaction at work is a better target.
